Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can get bored easily and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but they are also a great companion for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches which can be a nuisance for those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it is essential that the pet's owner has patience and understands that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who connect with their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

As with any animal species, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is contingent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food items, and plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A macaw with gold and blue eyes is a charming pet but is also extremely intelligent. They are known for their ability to learn new tricks and phrases quickly. This bird is a great choice for people who are just beginning their journey to avian companionship.
The bird is also extremely social and can easily bond with her family members. Macaws of gold and blue are known to have loud screams, including "flock call" as a part of their normal behavior. They might even play a game of squabbling and chewing at times when they're bored or frustrated. This type of behavior should be expected of prospective pet owners.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates on Lolita's health, and her status but there are still questions. Some experts, including Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring, and squid every day.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticized over the quality of the food they feed to their killer whales. The 57-year old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is endangered, she lives in a tank which some consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is unquestionable, Lolita's health continues to deteriorate. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that want to see her returned into the wild. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is ageing quickly and her health is declining.
Since her captor doesn't have to divulge the information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a role in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the whale, which died on Friday as a result of what was believed to be a kidney problem.
